Unmounted Instruction
At Bolingbrook Farm, our program is designed to create well rounded horse people. For this reason, we offer both mounted and unmounted instruction. Unmounted instruction allows for students to learn about topics that are not covered in the standard riding lesson and expand upon their knowledge base in both riding and horse care. Students of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join in!
We offer two forms of unmounted instruction to our students. The first is through our "Working Student Days." Working Student Days allow for students to come and experience how the barn runs for a day. Students participate in the day to day barn care such as feeding, blanketing, mucking stalls, and other daily chores. Additionally students will participate in some routine farm maintenance such as mending fence lines, checking fields for rocks or downed branches, clearing trails, and minor jump repair and painting.
The second form of unmounted instruction available to students is through our unmounted instructional clinics. These clinics take a deep dive into specific topics, allowing students to learn the finer workings of barn management and horse care in an interactive, hands on environment. These clinics give students the tools to effectively communicate with other equine professionals, such as vets and farriers or share information with their peers. Additionally students may need to apply their knowledge in their personal interactions with horses, whether their own, or a lesson horse. Some examples of unmounted clinic topics are:
-
Equine Nutrition
-
Equine First Aid
-
Shoeing and Farrier Care
-
Equine Anatomy
